The coin featuring Queen Catherine of Braganza (1638-1705), Queen Consort of the Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland after her marriage to Charles II of England, is the latest addition to the “Queens of Europe” series, aimed at portraying Portuguese princesses who reigned in Europe.
Designed by José Viriato, the obverse of the coin shows a representation of a cup of tea and the caption “Five O’Clock Tea”, recollecting the introduction of this drink in the English court by Queen Catherine of Braganza. The figure of Queen Catherine is shown on the reverse, inspired by a portrait painted by Peter Lely.
