Alentejo song (Cante Alentejano) features group polyphonic singing with roots in the Baixo Alentejo region, interpreted without the use of instruments, in a harmonious alliance of music and poetry.
The songs, known in Portuguese as "modas", cover traditional subjects such as rural life, nature, love and cultural and social contexts. They are passed down from generation to generation during rehearsals of choir groups and among friends and family, contributing to the strengthening of an already strong sense of identity and belonging.
To celebrate this unique form of expression of the heart and soul of people from Alentejo, listed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, INCM has minted a commemorative collector coin created by sculptor João Duarte.
