The provincial coins series reflect tones of everyday life in Finland’s historical provinces.
Ostrobothnia is one of nine historical provinces in Finland.
On the reverse side of the coin there is the historical province's coat of arms and the face value, 5 EURO.
The Ostrobothnian coin evokes the vast northern flatlands and the honest, determined Ostrobothnian people. The provincial coin depicts tar burning, which is a traditional Ostrobothnian industry.
The reverse side of the Ostrobothnian provincial coin shows the region's historic coat of arms, which dates back to the medieval fiefdoms. Administratively the historic provinces ceased to exist in 1634 when the country, then a part of Sweden, was divided into counties.
During the time of the historic provinces, Ostrobothnia covered much of what is now Southern Ostrobothnia, Central Ostrobothnia, Northern Ostrobothnia and Southern Lapland.
There are nine historical provinces in Finland: Åland, Tavastia, Karelia, Lapland, Ostrobothnia, Satakunta, Savo, Uusimaa and Finland Proper.
