More info

The Treaty of Tordesillas, signed in the Castilian village of Tordesillas on June 7, 1494, was a treaty concluded between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Crown of Castile to divide the lands "discovered and undiscovered" by both Crowns outside Europe. This treatise arose in the wake of the Portuguese contestation of the claims of the Crown of Castile, resulting from the voyage of Christopher Columbus, who a year and a half before had come to the so-called New World, claiming it officially for Elizabeth the Catholic (1474-1504).
