More info

The earthquake of 1755 reached Lisbon on November 1, 1755 and is estimated to have caused about 10,000 deaths. Seismologists estimate that it has reached magnitudes of 8.7 to 9 on the Richter scale which has resulted in almost complete destruction of the city. The earthquake was followed by a tsunami and multiple fires.
Despite such destruction, King Jose I and the prime minister, Marquês de Pombal, faced the situation and the reconstruction of the city started immediately. In less than a year after the earthquake there were no ruins in Lisbon. The downtown of Lisbon was rebuilt with buildings with earthquake proof, being the first world buildings to be constructed in this way.
