In 2019, Portugal celebrates the 600th anniversary of the discovery of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo by the navigators Tristão Vaz Teixeira, Bartolomeu Perestrelo and João Gonçalves Zarco. These discoveries took place during the first maritime incursions of the Portuguese in the Atlantic Ocean.
The national side of the circulation commemorative coin that marks this important historical landmark was created by Júlio Pomar. It is one of the last creations of this outstanding visual artist, whose unique work stretches across painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics and literature.
