On November 6, 1520, the king Manuel I of Portugal published the Royal Letter that created the office of Correio-Mor, for which his knight Luís Homem was appointed, thus giving rise to the public postal service in Portugal.
The Portuguese Mint celebrates the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese Post by issuing a commemorative coin signed by Luiz Duran, former Art Director of CTT and author of hundreds of postage stamps. The obverse of this coin features the iconic Mala Posta, a horse-drawn carriage that, from the mid-19th century onwards, started to regularly transport passengers and mail between Lisbon and Porto.
