The Olympic Games, this year being held in London, are the largest sporting event in the world - a manifestation of harmony between nations who compete with each other in a climate of peace and sportsmanship.
The Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office is marking this event with a coin created by José João de Brito, whose obverse bears the Portuguese coat of arms over an olive branch, symbolising a climate of peace and understanding between peoples. On its reverse is the symbol of the Portuguese Olympic Committee, an allusion to the discipline of Judo and the design of a fragment of one of the most modern pieces of architecture in London.
