João Henrique Pereira Villaret was born in Lisbon on the 10 th of May 1913. A doctor's son, in a family where everyone appreciated the performing arts, from a very young age he showed an interest in dance and theatre.
From amateur theatre he moved on to the Conservatory and then went to the National Theatre. The actor and declaimer acted in all theatre and cinema genres and even appeared on television in 1958 to introduce great poets to the general public, when he started to make regular appearances to read poems and talk about their authors.
