The coin was designed by the plastic artist Carlos Nogueira. On the obverse, there is an evocation of the sky, sometimes clear and sometimes turbulent, in a metaphor related to the firmament that unites us all. On the reverse the earth is depicted, a fundamental element of Saramago's work: the earth we tread, which gives us sustenance and to which we will return. Between these two realities, the cosmic and the earthly, there is always man - as the writer well knew and described.
