Portugal 2022 5€ Dinosaur PROOF

The coin, designed by the expert in scientific illustration Joana Bruno, emphasizes the eggs of Lourinhanosaurus antunesi. On the obverse, it is depicted the skeleton of an embryo, using the outline of the coin as if it were the shell of an egg; on the reverse, a newborn baby dinosaur, observing its surroundings.

The “Lizard of Lourinhã”

The «Lourinhã lizard» was named in honor of the famous paleontologist Miguel Telles Antunes. The discovery of this dinosaur proved to be particularly rich and special, as in addition to the skeletons of three individuals, one of them quite complete, in 1993 a nest with more than 100 eggs was also identified. These archaeological findings allowed us to determine that a young adult could measure about 4.5 meters and weigh 160 kg.
