To bring to a close the Queens of Europe series, portraying Portuguese princesses who, through marriage, reigned in many European nations, a coin has been created dedicated to Queen Maria Bárbara de Bragança, who married King Fernando VI of Spain in 1729.
Designed by sculptor Rui Vasquez, the obverse of this coin features a representation of the Princess Exchange, a ceremony that took place in the middle of the Caia River, between Elvas and Badajoz, on a grand wooden palace bridge built to celebrate the double marriage of the children of King João V of Portugal - Maria Bárbara and José - to the children of Philip V of Spain - Fernando VI and Mariana Vitória.
