The provincial coins series reflect tones of everyday life in Finland’s historical provinces.
Proper is one of nine historical provinces in Finland.
A contest was held for the artistic design of the reverse of the provincial coins. The competition was won by the sculptor Nora Tapper with her proposal entitled "Vanhassa vara" (The old things endures). "In spite of the apparent similarities, life in the different provinces has been very different. The place where you lived affected your choice of subsistence, for example: in Finland, the woodwool was so developed that the products were exported to foreign countries, for this reason I drew a Rusko spoon, a traditional drinking vessel, in the currency of Finland Proper".
On the reverse side of the coin there is the historical province's coat of arms and the face value, 5 EURO.
There are nine historical provinces in Finland: Åland, Tavastia, Karelia, Lapland, Ostrobothnia, Satakunta, Savo, Uusimaa and Finland Proper.
