Continuing the cycle alluding to «The Ages of Europe», which reflects some of the most important European artistic movements, the 2018 theme of the Europe series is the Renaissance, an era between the 14th and 17th centuries characterised by the recovery of the Classical Antiquity references, both with respect to thought and to the arts and aesthetics.
The Portuguese coin, designed by sculptor Eloísa Byrne, presents the loxodromic curve, a discovery of the Portuguese mathematician Pedro Nunes in 1537 that had a decisive impact on the navigation and the cartography of the globe.
