More info

The first Portuguese university was founded in Lisbon in 1288 by Denis of Portugal, and its seat alternated between Lisbon and Coimbra, where it was permanently established in the year 1537, at which time it was the only university institution to exist in the country.
Higher education came back to the capital city in the 19th Century in the form of the School of Medicine and Surgery, the School of Pharmacy, the Polytechnic School and the Higher Course of Letters. The scientific legacy of these institutions served as a basis for the creation of the University of Lisbon by the Republican regime, by a decree signed on the 22nd of March 1911.
Since then, throughout its 100 years of history the University of Lisbon has grown, evolved and guaranteed the cultural and scientific foundations of several generations, consolidating the transmission of learning and the expansion of knowledge in Portugal and the World.
