During the year in which the European Silver Programme is dedicated to “European Writers”, the Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office is paying homage to José Saramago, one of the most celebrated Portuguese authors, with a coin designed by sculptor Vitor Santos.
On the obverse of the coin is a stylised representation of the face of José Saramago. On the reverse are its face value and a reference to the Nobel Prize for Literature, awarded to the author by the Swedish Academy in 1998.
