In 1543, three Portuguese guys arrived at the island of Tanegashima, being the first Europeans to come get contact with the Land of the Rising Sun. From the outset, Portugal and Japan influenced each other in several areas, from technical to artistic, and maintained intense commercial relations. One of the most popular Japanese items was the famous lacquer pieces (urushi), created by master craftsmen using a technique as old as complex.
