Climate change is the most serious environmental threat of our times. It is visible as regional as well as global changes in temperature, rainfall and wind conditions in addition to the rise in the ocean surface. In order to arrest this change, research data and an understanding of what is happening on the Earth’s surface, atmosphere and the entire global ecosystem are required.

Nature's own air quality meter - beard lichen - is depicted on the obverse side of this commemorative euro-currency coin. The relief is composed of a root-like branching network. The insightful motif can also be interpreted as representing the lungs - reminding us of the importance of air quality and its study. The pictorial theme has been designed by artist duo Tuominen Patel (Terhi Tuominen and Jitan V. Patel).
