THE AQUARIUM
The Vasco da Gama Aquarium project was conceived in the context of the celebrations of the "IV centenary of the departure of Vasco da Gama, for the discovery of the Maritime Path to India", with the support of the King Carlos I of Portugal, pioneer of Oceanography in the country.
It was inaugurated on May 20, 1898, in the presence of the sovereign. Initially it only had one floor, but a second has been added around 1916, when it benefited from major renovations.
In 2021, the aquarium stopped to had large marine animals. In the old tank of the suckers, a new facility was opened called "Window to the Ocean", a fully interactive room build to the youngest marine lovers.
