The third coin in the "Endangered Plant Species" series
After the four-leaf clover (Marsilea quadrifolia) and the Alcar-do-Algarve (Tuberaria major), we now have the third coin in the "Species of Threatened Plants" series, which aims to promote knowledge and the preservation of species of the national flora currently in danger. Like the two previous coins, the collection coin dedicated to the long-leaved wild mint was designed by the talented illustrator Catarina Sobral, awarded both nationally and internationally.
Long-leaved wild mint, despite looking like just another variety of mint to the unwary eye, contributes significantly to the richness of local flora and habitats. While there are no known significant threats to this plant, ensuring its conservation and even bolstering its population is essential to prevent decline.
The PROOF silver version has colorful details and an even more special touch: it is the first Portuguese coin with a scent!
It is a revolutionary milestone, this coin brings an extraordinary surprise: it is the first Portuguese coin with a smell! Mint fragrance microcapsules were incorporated into the paint, releasing their scent when rubbed. Just like the plant itself, this scent will be ephemeral, so we should enjoy this sensory experience while we can.
