José Manuel Cerqueira Afonso dos Santos — better known as José Afonso, or Zeca Afonso — was born on August 2, 1929, in Aveiro, and went on to become one of the most influential figures of the Portuguese twentieth century. Poet, singer and composer of numerous well-known works, he gave words, voice and melody to "Grândola, Vila Morena", a song used by the Armed Forces Movement as a starting signal for the Revolution of April 25, 1974.
This coin, which inaugurates the series dedicated to Portuguese Musicians, was designed by the prestigious designer and professor in the Department of Communication and Art at the University of Aveiro, Francisco Providência.
